Indiana summers are hot and humid, with temperatures often climbing into the 80s and 90s. A functioning air conditioning system is a must for every homeowner.

If your AC isn’t prepared for the season, however, it could struggle to keep up with the demand, leading to discomfort, higher energy bills, and even unexpected breakdowns.

That’s why a little planning now goes a long way. Getting your AC ready before the summer season hits full swing ensures it runs efficiently, keeps your home cool, and saves you money in the long run.

In this guide, we’ll walk through essential air conditioner tips for summer, explain the basics of air conditioner summer maintenance, and show you how to maintain your air conditioner so it performs at its best when you need it most.

1. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

One of the most important steps in air conditioner summer maintenance is scheduling a professional tune-up before the temperatures soar.

An experienced HVAC technician can spot small issues before they turn into costly repairs, ensuring your system runs smoothly when you need it most.

Through routine maintenance tasks, these tune-ups help your air conditioner operate more efficiently, reduce the risk of mid-season breakdowns, and can even extend the lifespan of your unit.

Skipping this essential service may save a little money upfront, but it often leads to higher energy bills or emergency repair costs down the road. Investing in an annual tune-up is one of the smartest ways to protect your home’s comfort and keep your cooling system performing at its best all summer long.

2. Change or Clean Air Filters

One of the easiest and most effective ways to boost your AC’s performance is by changing or cleaning the air filters regularly.

Dirty filters restrict airflow, making your system work harder to cool your home—leading to higher energy bills and increased wear and tear.

Depending on your usage and the type of filter you have, it’s best to replace or clean them every 1 to 3 months. This simple DIY task not only improves energy efficiency but also enhances indoor air quality by trapping dust, pollen, and other allergens that circulate through your home.

3. Clean and Clear Around the Outdoor Unit

Your AC’s outdoor unit, also known as the condenser, plays a crucial role in releasing heat from your home. However, this unit needs plenty of space to function properly.

Before summer hits, take a few minutes to clear any debris within a two-foot radius around the condenser and gently hose off any visible dirt on the coils. Keeping this area clean ensures your system can breathe and cool your home effectively during Indiana’s hottest months.

4. Check Thermostat Settings

Before the summer heat arrives, take a moment to check that your thermostat is working properly and set to cooling mode.

If you haven’t already, consider upgrading to a programmable thermostat. These devices can automatically adjust temperatures based on your schedule, helping you save on cooling costs without sacrificing comfort.

5. Inspect Ductwork and Vents

Inspecting your home’s ductwork and vents is an often-overlooked part of how to maintain your air conditioner.

Damaged or disconnected ducts can leak cool air into unused spaces, forcing your system to work harder and driving up your energy bills.

Walk through your home and check for any visible gaps or disconnections in the ducts. Make sure all supply and return vents are free from obstructions like furniture, rugs, or curtains.

This small but important task helps ensure your system is delivering cool air efficiently to every room. Additionally, cleaning vent grilles to remove dust buildup further improves airflow and reduces strain on your system.

6. Test the System Before Temperatures Rise

Don’t wait for a 90-degree day to find out your AC isn’t working. One of the smartest air conditioner tips for summer is to run your system early in the season to make sure everything is functioning properly.

Turn on the cooling mode and let it run for a full cycle. Listen for unusual noises, check that cool air is flowing from the vents, and monitor how quickly your home reaches the set temperature.

Catching small issues now gives you time to fix them before Indiana’s summer heat is in full swing.

7. Seal Windows and Doors

Even the most efficient air conditioner can struggle if cool air is escaping through leaks around your windows and doors.

Take time to inspect these areas and replace worn weather stripping or reapply caulk where needed. Sealing drafts not only helps maintain a consistent indoor temperature but also reduces the workload on your AC system.

For extra summer protection, consider using blackout curtains in your windows to block out heat from direct sunlight.

8. Monitor Refrigerant Levels

While checking and refilling refrigerant is a job for licensed HVAC professionals, knowing the warning signs of low refrigerant levels can help you act quickly.

Refrigerant is essential for your air conditioner to cool your home effectively. If levels are low, your system may blow warm air, run longer cycles, or freeze up entirely.

Addressing refrigerant issues early prevents costly damage and keeps your AC running strong during Indiana’s hottest summer days.

9. Consider an AC Upgrade If Necessary

If your air conditioner is over 10–15 years old, frequently requires repairs, or results in high energy bills, it might be time for an upgrade.

Newer AC models are much more energy-efficient, helping you save on cooling costs while keeping your home comfortable. Plus, many newer models qualify for rebates or incentives.

Upgrading now can prevent emergency breakdowns during peak summer heat, ensuring you stay cool when you need it most.
